The True Meaning of Christmas Worship

Around Christmastime, our thoughts turn to loved-ones, our family and our friends. Amidst the busy rush of shopping, turkey roasting, and planning the 50-millionth annual Christmas pageant, we fight to remind ourselves of the beauty of the message of the first Christmas.

One of the most foundational elements of our Christian theology is the miracle of the incarnation - God wrapped in fragile human flesh. It is an old and familiar truth, one we dust off every year around this time. But there is a profound message in the mystery. Could it be that in this tiny baby, God is trying to show us how all encounters with God occur?

Too often, our movement in worship or any other approach to God is one of us grasping for Him, seeking to escape Earth and achieve Heaven, trying to leave our boring, mundane existence and somehow lose ourselves in a mystical bliss. But we are not called to be escapists. It is false spirituality to use prayer and worship as a means of avoiding our life on Earth. Far from the Biblical idea of heavenly hope, this misguided pursuit proves to be fruitless time and time again. God has not left us on our own. The incarnation rings with this powerful message: "God has come to invade Earth!" God has come to do for us what we could not, and to do through us what we cannot. This is the greatness of the Gospel. We didn't find Him, He found us.

Furthermore, Jesus had the appearance of His contemporaries. He came to Earth as a son. He worked as a carpenter. He dressed in Jewish attire appropriate to His time. He used the cultural mediums of His time to communicate a timeless message.

But what does this mean to us as worship leaders? It describes our task perfectly: to provide an environment that allows God to invade the lives of ordinary people. We are supplying the medium for the encounter. We invite the holy presence of the living God to wrap Himself with the feeble "flesh" of music and song. Here in the midst of ordinary people and normal surroundings, heaven invades earth, and a holy moment takes place. We don't invent it, we don't cause it and we don't coerce God to come. He comes because that's his nature. And we should expect it every Sunday.

A couple of years ago, I was completely stressed out trying to put on a Christmas production. We were all behind schedule and it seemed like we were never going to get everything done. We had several performances planned and it jus wasn't working. I remember the night after one of the last rehearsals we had finished up and no one was feeling particularly joyful, peaceful or any other Christmas emotion. We gathered for a few final instructions and I remember hearing the Lord whisper to me, "Get down on your knees." So we all got down on our knees and began to pray out of humility, brokenness and in reality, frustration. There were about 150 people in the room and all of a sudden, it was like God was there. As we prayed, I felt as though He was saying, "I'm going to do this for you because I love showing up in the most unlikely of places." I remember thinking that it gave Him extreme pleasure to make something out of nothing, to create an instrument of worship out of a group of stressed out musicians. It was a turning point for our group in both attitude and commitment. We saw God do a miracle in that Christmas production that took us to a whole new level of influence in our city. There's no doubt that we were in trouble and we'd bitten off more than we could chew. We were desperate. And God was happy to use our weak and meager offerings to glorify Himself and reveal this miracle to us.

Every year we dance through the hoops and bog down in all the trappings and trimmings of celebrating the season. But, through the many rehearsals, and the hectic coordination of the band and singers, through the most elaborate and the most simple of all presentations and songs, let Heaven invade Earth! May the holy God be clothed in all that is said and sung, so that people can bow their hearts in worship, turning ordinary moments into holy, sacred encounters.

"Cricket"

El deporte del "Cricket" ha causado una gran sensacion. En uno de los partidos de dicho juego, oficiales del juego intervinieron por una manipulacion en la pelota de parte del equipo de Pakistan. Despues de de largas horas de diferencias y disputas, el equipo de Inglaterra salio victorioso contra Pakistan. Esta situacion ha causado tan gran sensacion, que los medios de comunicacion Britanicos han comparado el partido con la situacion de guerra en el Libano.

Mas alla de las estrellas...Festival musical!

Solo tomo un rato para hablarles de un evento que se esta desarollando en Puerto Rico el cual tiene por nombre "Beyond the stars music fest". Este evento reune bandas locales (de la isla) de todos lo generos dentro del rock, reggae, ska y musica urbana, para hacer un festival con un mensaje positivo para nuestra juventud.
Hoy dia vemos como jovenes caen bajo las presiones de nuestra sociedad, Cada dia hay mas embarazos prematuros, alcoholicos, drogadictos y jovenes sin esperanza en sus futuros. Como jovenes vemos la musica como una expresion, un escape y forma de unir personas bajo un mismo sonido. Canales como "mtv" son los predominantes dentro de jovenes ya que la muscia hasta reune personas con mismos intereses y forma elemento importante dentro de nuestra sociedad moderna.
Beyond the stars reune jovenes de la isla para
decirles que hay opciones y esperanza. Hemos tenido la oprtunidad de tocar en sitios como el Teatro Braulio Castillo en Bayamon y la plaza del Qinto Centenario en San Juan. Este a~o por quinta vez volveremos el 11 de octubre pronto les dare los detalles. Esperen nuestro aniversario en el 2007 que se celebrara en el coliseo Pedrin Zorilla!
